OK, you have a beautiful young lady with a very long black and white jumper, thigh-length stockings, a short “bob” wig and some trendy sunglasses. So what do you do?

Simple. You go for some 60s style glamourous photographs. Apply darker lipstick and eye makeup and darker nail varnish. The long jumper becomes a sexy mini-dress, the wig goes on and the beautiful young lady turns into a 60s glamourous fashion starlet. Then push the brightness and contrast and convert to black and white.

So what do you think? Did it work? I think she should be on the cover of a fashion magazine advertising retro-60s glamour.

CRW_0611 Can Fine Art Nudes be in colour?

On Friday, I had an excellent shoot with the lovely Kirsten.

We shot some art nude images as I’m doing that style for my college Portraiture class.

Now, I know that fine art nudes tend to be in black and white, but I thought that, because she has fantastic long, red hair and gorgeous dark eyes, I’d leave the shots in colour to bring them out more.

So, do they still count as “Fine Art” or does proper fine art depend on the B&W presentation, as well as pose, intent and all the other things?

Personally, I say yes, but what do I know…?

So tell me, what's makes this image an "art" nude as opposed to just some naked woman lying on the rocks, or even pornography?

Does an image have to fulfil certain conditions before it can be considered art?

Things like:

  • Has it been published?
  • Has it been exhibited?
  • Did someone arbitrarily say "Ooh, nice art."?
  • Do you have to "know" someone specific?
  • Do you have to BE someone specific?
  • Are there specific aesthetic conditions that it must meet?
  • Can "art nude" only be acceptable in black and white?

So what makes this "art" and another image just "coffee table porn" as it was described to me recently?

Join in the discussion and maybe we can work it out? Or does it really matter? Is it ALL subjective - one person's art is another's porn is another's art...etc.?

I’ve just been adding some more topics into my forums on here.

It’d be really cool if you could join me and we can get some interesting and useful discussions going.

Like, “What’s the difference between art-nude and just naked, art and pornography?”

Go on, you know you want to…

Or am I the only one who’s wondering…?
