CRW_0611 Can Fine Art Nudes be in colour?

On Friday, I had an excellent shoot with the lovely Kirsten.

We shot some art nude images as I’m doing that style for my college Portraiture class.

Now, I know that fine art nudes tend to be in black and white, but I thought that, because she has fantastic long, red hair and gorgeous dark eyes, I’d leave the shots in colour to bring them out more.

So, do they still count as “Fine Art” or does proper fine art depend on the B&W presentation, as well as pose, intent and all the other things?

Personally, I say yes, but what do I know…?

Starman Photo Workbook

Welcome to my Workbook.

This is where I’ll be putting anything that I find interesting to do with my photography, college work or just general “clippings” from other sites that I think might come in useful or are interesting.

So, help yourself to what you see if you find it useful too. Check back every so often, I’ll be trying to keep it updated regularly with … stuff … whatever I want to save here, basically…

Some/most of these links take you to information from other sites, or external web pages - I can’t be responsible for what’s on those other sites, but they were fine when I added them, so if you find any broken links or dodgy data, let me know and I’ll update this page.

If its not useful to you…well, what are you staring at? Go and find something better to do with your time… ;-) Listen to as much Rush as you can, especially 2112 and the Fear Trilogy. You won’t regret it…

So tell me, what’s makes this image an “art” nude as opposed to just some naked woman lying on the rocks, or even pornography?

Does an image have to fulfil certain conditions before it can be considered art?

Things like:

  • Has it been published?
  • Has it been exhibited?
  • Did someone arbitrarily say “Ooh, nice art.“?
  • Do you have to “know” someone specific?
  • Do you have to BE someone specific?
  • Are there specific aesthetic conditions that it must meet?
  • Can “art nude” only be acceptable in black and white?

So what makes this “art” and another image just “coffee table porn” as it was described to me recently?

Join in the discussion and maybe we can work it out? Or does it really matter? Is it ALL subjective - one person’s art is another’s porn is another’s art…etc.?

I’ve just been adding some more topics into my forums on here.

It’d be really cool if you could join me and we can get some interesting and useful discussions going.

Like, “What’s the difference between art-nude and just naked, art and pornography?”

Go on, you know you want to…

Or am I the only one who’s wondering…?
